Moldova's National Anticorruption Centre detains candidate for office of Chisinau mayor

Chisinau, 21 September /MOLDPRES/ - The candidate of the League of  Cities and Communes (LOC) for the office of general mayor of Chisinau, Mihail Bagas, who submitted the documents for registration on 19 September, today was detained by officers of the National Anticorruption Office (CNA) and prosecutors of the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office (PA).   

The League of Cities and Communes informed that it had taken note of the information appeared on the detention of the candidate for the position of Chisinau general mayor, Mihail Bagas. The formation voices hope that the investigation bodies will fulfill their job duties impartially and fairly, in strict accordance with the law and procedural norms.     

„At the same time, we express concern about the carrying out of operative measures and of the detention of the LOC candidate at a distance of two days after the submission of the documents for participation in the local polls. Each person and, implicitly, each candidate can be held criminally liable only if there is pertinent evidence as to the infringement of the law provisions and the electoral legislation,’’ reads a communiqué of the party.     

In the context, the League of Cities and Communes demands that the investigation bodies are transparent, public and reasoned by the needed rules of evidence; otherwise, such actions carried out on the electoral period can be described as political pressure and attempt to seriously harm the image of the political party.
