President called on free world to support Moldova

Chisinau, 22 Sep. /MOLDPRES/- President Maia Sandu concluded her working visit to the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, held in New York, USA. Maia Sandu urged all the countries of the free world to support Ukraine, which is resisting the Russian invasion, and the Republic of Moldova, which is on the front line in the fight for democracy, the presidential press service has reported.

"I am calling on the European Commission and all EU member countries to support us. I also address beyond the EU borders, to all the countries of the free world. Today, the fight for democracy in any corner of the world is the struggle for democracy everywhere," the president said.

On the sidelines of the General Assembly, Maia Sandu met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, and discussed Moldova's progress, current challenges, regional security and impact of the border war. Also, the head of state met President of the United States of America Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden, and had a series of bilateral meetings with leaders of European countries to promote the European path of the Republic of Moldova and to strengthen bilateral relations. The official had talks with her counterparts from several European countries: Bulgarian president Rumen Radev, president of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, president of the Swiss Confederation Alain Berset, president of Estonia Alar Karis and president of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs. Also she met president of Slovakia Zuzana Čaputová and president of Hungary Katalin Novák.

Maia Sandu participated in the Democracy Delivers conference, organized by USAID and the Ford and Rockefeller Foundations, where she spoke about the reforms to strengthen our democracy and prepare for accession to the EU. On the sidelines of the conference, the head of state had talks with Secretary of State of the United States of America Antony Blinken, and Samantha Power, USAID Administrator.

The President called on the Ford, Rockefeller and Open Society Foundations to join us on this ambitious path of transformation. The official met Karan Bhatia, Google's global head of government affairs and public policy, who announced that Google will support Moldova in efforts to strengthen cyber security and promote digital literacy, an initiative for which the company is offering 1 million of US dollars.
