Chisinau, 28 Sep. /MOLDPRES/- Authorities presented today the development project of Giurgiulești port, the event being organized on the territory of the port.
"Giurgiulesti Port needs investments and a serious medium and long-term development plan. Everything we do now, in the coming years, will radically change logistics, transport capabilities, the way it is transported. In 2021 and 2022, Moldova exported between 60% and 80% of its goods through other ports due to lack of transshipment capacity. It is important to build additional transshipment capacities of at least 800 thousand tons in Giurgiulesti port. We need investments of about 40 million euros", said Andrei Spînu, Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development (MIDR).
According to the MIDR head, among the priorities is the procurement of equipment for the state naval port.
Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vladimir Bolea said that the development program of Giurgiulesti Port will have a favorable impact primarily on the agricultural sector.
The program is part of the Moldova Infrastructure Reconstruction Plan 5+. Its implementation will also be carried out with the support of the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group that promotes sustainable economic growth in developing countries, by financing investments from the private sector, mobilizing capital from the international financial markets and by offering of consulting services for private investors and governments.
Giurgiulești Port, also known as Giurgiulești International Free Port, is the only port in the Republic of Moldova accessible to maritime vessels, located at km 133.8 (72.2 nautical miles) of the Danube River, in the south of the country, bordered by Romania and Ukraine.
