Chisinau, 29 September /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova has joined the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism, which will allow the country benefiting from assistance in case of calamities, disasters or other unforeseen crises. Interior Minister Adrian Efros and European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič signed an Agreement to this end in Chisinau today.
The EU Civil Protection Mechanism is a European mechanism of solidarity, meant to back the countries in crisis and disaster situation. Once officially joining the mechanism, Moldova will be able also to provide assistance to other states at risk through this means, thus ensuring a quick and well-coordinated European response, and the country will get back the costs borne.
At the event, Interior Minister Adrian Efros highlighted the benefits of this mechanism, which represents a direct help for the citizens. ’’This mechanism will provide Moldova more support on behalf of the European Union. We will be more protected, more resilient to disasters. Through this European mechanism, we are no longer energy vulnerable in the hospitals from our country. We have generators, which give us possibility that, if the power supply is disconnected, the hospitals are able to continue their interventions and surgical operations,’’ Adrian Efros said.
For his part, European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič said the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism would become stronger due to Moldova’s contribution, referring to the situation in which the country had acted with the unleashing of the war in Ukraine. ‘’At present, all hospitals of Moldova enjoy energy autonomy and are endowed with generators of medium or large dimensions. Most of them came through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. Moldova will be full-fledged member and with duties in the family of the EU states. Becoming EU member, the country will be able to get support, coordination and financing in any situation in which it will need help,’’ Janez Lenarčič said.
On 28 April this year, European Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič presented to Moldova the roadmap for the accession to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. The Agreement on Moldova’s accession to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism will enter into force on 1 January 2024.
