Chisinau, 30 September /MOLDPRES/ - The winners of The Teacher of the Year contest, the 2023 edition, were awarded in Chisinau today.

The prizes were awarded at three categories. Thus, nine of the best educators, teachers and professors were awarded prizes worth 50,000 lei each for place I, 25,000 lei – for the place II and 15,000 lei – for the place III.

The ceremony was held at the multifunctional complex Chisinau Arena and started with the signing of Moldova’s national anthem. At the same time, those present in the event stood silent for one minute in the memory of the departed writer Ion Druta.

Attending the event was also President Maia Sandu, who congratulated the teachers on their professional day, noting that the teachers had an honourable, but quite difficult mission.

„I thank all teachers who, in the country’s capital or in a far-away village, help the  children get the courage to discover their potential and to develop it. Today, we award the prize, The Teacher of the Year, to nine teachers; yet, our gratitude is to all teachers, educators and professors, who managed to have performance to carry out two growths. I mean their growth as professionals and as moral bench marks for generations of children, as well as the education of other beings. We want the education of the children from Moldova to be priority both at the level of the state’s institutions and at the one of local communities, as well as at the level of each family. The quality of life in the next decades, the quality of the medical system, of all services of the state, of justice, of the environment, of the economy’s state, of the central and local administration, including the quality of the political establishment, depend on the quality of the education which we provide at present. And you, dear teachers, are in the forefront of this effort,’’ Maia Sandu said.

Education and Research Minister Dan Perciun thanked the teachers for the work carried out. ‘’The teachers model the future, educating the people which will create it. Outlining generations is a great responsibility and you deserve every respect and appreciation of each citizen of this country for the work and sacrifice you do. I assure you that we, at the ministry, hear, see and understand the difficulties which exist; we will solve them gradually; time and resources are necessary, in order to heal an extenuated, overloaded and oversized system; yet, we have a plan, we announced a list of priorities and I am sure that we will succeed together,’’ the minister noted.

About 4,500 teachers and specialists in education from all over Moldova participated in the event. The prize awarding ceremony was followed by a festive concert dedicated to the professional day of the education employees.

The republican contest, The Teacher of the Year, has been organized since 2006, in order to encourage the performance in education and enhance the prestige of the profession of teacher.

About 55,000 teachers work in Moldova’s education system.
