Drivers detected driving drunk, drugged run risk to be punished with imprisonment in Moldova

Chisinau, 26 October /MOLDPRES/ - Drivers who drive drunk or drugged and trigger traffic accidents will be sanctioned more toughly. The parliament today approved a draft law to this effect.
Thus, the drivers detected driving with advanced state of alcoholic ebriety or who consumed drugs run the risk of being punished with non-remunerated labour for the benefit of the community or up to one year of imprisonment, with the cancellation of the right to drive transport means.
Also, the term of imprisonment will be increased up to 15 years for drunk drivers who triggered traffic accidents resulted in the serious damage caused to health or death of the person. The drivers who were driving drunk when committing the traffic accident and left the place of the deed, did not hold driver’s licence and were deprived of the right to drive transport means, will be punished with imprisonment from 3 to 7 years.
The draft also suggest amendments to the Criminal Code, so that drunk drivers who triggered traffic accidents and those who left the place of the accident should not be able to benefit from a milder punishment.
Also, the Contravention Code will be completed with a provision stipulating that the drivers detected driving drunk twice or more times during the same year should be excepted from the right to pay a half of the value of the contravention.
Statistics data shows that 299 traffic accidents occurred because of drunk drivers in 2022, in the wake of which 24 people died and 143 were injured.
