Chisinau, 17 November /MOLDPRES/ - As many as 2,287 children were born prematurely in 2022. The Health Ministry unveiled data to this effect today, in the context of the World Prematurity Day, marked on 17 November.

According to the ministry, hundreds of children are annually born with an extremely light and quite light weight and they need special medical care provided by physicians and medical assistants from perinatal centres.

„To provide quality medical assistance and ensure friendly conditions for the development of babies, the perinatal centres are endowed by the Health Ministry with advanced devices, such as resuscitation tables, incubators, radiant tables, ultrasound apparatus, electrocardiographs, lung ventilators, defibrillators,’’ the institution noted.

Also, soon, about 700 prematurely-born children, who are brought from all over Moldova to the prematurely-born babies section of the Mother and Child Institute, will be examined and treated in modern conditions. ‘’The section of prematurely-born babies is placed in a two-storied block of flats, under capital repair, within a cross-border project with Romania. The Health Ministry this year allocated 7 million lei (about 350,000 euros) for the section’s renovation and over one million euros represents the European Union’s contribution. The section will be endowed inclusively with advanced medical equipment and is to be inaugurated in 2024,’’ the Health Ministry said.

The World Prematurity Day is annually marked on 17 November, under a decision by the World Health Organization.
