EcoContact association of Moldova: Human Rights Day also about right to sound environment

Chisinau, 7 December /MOLDPRES/ - We mark the Human Rights Day on 10 December – an opportune occasion to emphasize that the right to a sound environment is an essential pillar of the human rights and each person has a fundamental right to live in a clean, safe and sustainable environment, which is to support his/her health and well-being. Especially as, on the last period, this right has been jeopardized and ignored, as more governments failed in this respect. The EcoContact Association made statements to this effect.    

According to the organization, a sound environment is an important component for the fulfillment of the other fundamental rights, such as the right to health, to nourishment and to a decent living. And the environmental protection is not only a moral commitment, but also a need for the next generations.  

„In the context, we remind about the Guide of the defenders of the right to a sound environment – a guide mark for the settlement of the problems related to the process of enforcement of the concerned provisions as to the protection of the environment and guaranteeing the right to a sound environment. To easier cover the Guide, we selected the most important information and included it in five folders: What the human rights to a sound environment sees; Which are the authorities in charge of finding out and sanctioning of the infringements of the environmental legislation; Which are the rights and duties of the environmental defenders; Useful information for environmental defenders,’’ EcoContact said.        

The association says that, through the Aarhus Environmental Information and Consultancy Center and the activities carried out, it has the goal to promote the right to a sound environment, as well as the access to environmental information, including the public’s participation in taking decisions.     

The informative material was produced within the project, Shield for human rights defenders – Support for the human rights defenders of Moldova. The project is implemented by the Legal Resources Center of Moldova, in partnership with the EcoContact Association and the International Commission of Jurists – European Institutions, with the financial support of the European Union and co-financed by Sweden.
