Ninth edition of national annual forum of nut farmers held in Moldovan capital

Chisinau, 14 December /MOLDPRES/ - The country’s production of nuts, its quality, the tendencies of development of the sector and the opportunities of the sales markets are subjects discussed at the ninth edition of the national annual forum of nut farmers from Moldova in Chisinau today.    

Deputy Prime Minister, Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Vladimir Bolea said that the taste and quality of the Moldovan nuts consolidated the country’s image on the international markets. ‘’Our nuts conquer numerous sales markets, due to the investments which the sector is making, as well as the association, which facilitates the exchange of good practices and information between producers. The joint efforts will help us strengthen this branch in continuation, maintaining the development direction. The ministry works on the draft law of horticulture, in order to improve including the development of the nut growing branch. A new stage for the horticultural sector comes: creation of the Horticultural Office. In this respect, we work along with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID),’’ Vladimir Bolea said.     

The Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry said that subsidies worth up to 15,000 lei per one hectares were provided for the creation of a plantation of nut trees and 100,000 lei per one hectare – for the creation of graft plantations and mother/father plantations. Also, financial support is provided for the purchasing of equipment for harvesting, primary processing and preservation of nuts.    

According to statistics data, Moldova annually exports between 9,000 and 12,000 tons of nut kernel to about 33 countries. This year, for the first time ever, nut kernel was exported to Libya, Lebanon and Lesotho.
