Chisinau, 18 Jan. /MOLDPRES/- Lawmakers gathered today in an extraordinary session re-examined the legislative initiative on the amendment to the Electoral Code and the Law on political parties, following the note of President Maia Sandu. The parliamentary opposition left today's meeting.
The note concerns the provisions of the legislative initiative that refer to the date of the elections for the position of president of the Republic of Moldova. It aims to ensure the predictability of the electoral process, as well as to hold free, fair and transparent elections. Accordingly, the date of the elections for the position of president of the Republic of Moldova will be established, by decision of the Parliament, at least 60 days before the day of the elections.
It also reads the inconsistency of the term for organizing elections in case of a vacancy of the position of president of the Republic of Moldova with the constitutional norms. In this context, it is suggested to strictly adopt the text of the constitutional norm, in order to ensure its supremacy. Therefore, in the event of a vacancy in the position of President of the Republic of Moldova, the elections will be organized within two months from the date of the vacancy.
The draft amendment to the Electoral Code and the Law on Political Parties was adopted by the Parliament at the end of the autumn session.
