Chişinău, 24 Jan. /MOLDPRES/- Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Nicu Popescu announced his resignation today. He said he has met the goals set at the beginning of the term and needs a break.
"In order to avoid any kind of misinterpretation regarding the reason for my resignation, I clearly emphasize that I have successfully fulfilled the foreign policy objectives established together and alongside President Maia Sandu at the beginning of this mandate. I need a break. I assure you I will continue to contribute to the efforts of the governing team to bring the Republic of Moldova into the European Union and to continuously ensure peace, stability and calm in our country", Popescu said.
He reviewed the achievements of recent years saying that during the time he held the position of minister he had more than 160 bilateral meetings at the level of foreign ministers. "In these meetings I managed to strengthen and continue the dialogue with 55 states from around the world. I made 76 visits abroad, of which 23 visits were in Brussels. During the period, the Republic of Moldova was visited by about 50 of my counterparts from the partner states of the Republic of Moldova", he said.
"In recent years, we submitted the application for joining the European Union. We became a candidate state for accession and firmly and irreversibly anchored the Republic of Moldova in the great European family. The accession process is taking place with the best dynamics, even at today's cabinet meeting we will adopt the necessary changes to the national plan for accession to the European Union", he said.
