Chisinau, 25 Jan. /MOLDPRES/- Hungary is a firm and unconditional supporter of the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, because the membership of this country would bring benefits to the community block and increase competitiveness. Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Szijjarto made the statement in Budapest, AGERPRES has reported.
Following a meeting with Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea, Peter Szijjarto said "Hungary's position is clear: each potential candidate for EU membership must be evaluated individually."
"We must not correlate the integration processes of different countries with each other, and we must not allow states with weaker performances to take hostage the integration of others," he said.
The official also said "speeding up Moldova's accession to the EU would help the European Union to improve its competitiveness again, and Hungary has always promoted the expansion of the EU to the southeast".
In June 2022, the Republic of Moldova received the status of a candidate country for joining the European Union. Chisinau authorities were presented with nine conditions to proceed to the next stage of accession - negotiations.
