Law on geographical names approved by government

Chisinau, 31 Jan. /MOLDPRES/- The names of all geographical objects on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, villages, cities, regions, etc. will be regulated by a new law, approved by the government today. The document sets the authorities' duties in the sector, and the general criteria for geographical names on language and spelling, the government's communication department has reported.

Under the project, when establishing geographical names, historical, ethnic, linguistic characteristics and basic activity of the local population will be taken into account, and similar or confusing names will be excluded.

The public authorities that initiate the process of assigning or changing names will request the advisory opinion of the National Commission for Geographical Names. Later, the proposed name will be included in the Register of Geographical Names.

Currently, the field of geographical names in the Republic of Moldova is not regulated by national legislation, and the activities related to this process, over the years, were carried out within the Academy of Sciences of Moldova.
