Chisinau, 21 February /MOLDPRES/ - The government has nominated the operator of electric energy market, SRL „Operatorul Pieței de Energie M (Energy Market Operator M Ltd - OPEM) in Moldova, as a branch of the OPCOM stock company from Romania. The cabinet approved a decision to this effect at a today’s meeting.
According to the government’s communication department, OPEM will be the platform of trading electric energy and will operationalize the intraday energy markets and for tomorrow. It will give correct signals to the market and will subsequently allow establishing differentiated tariffs for electric energy for the end consumers.
Till the establishment of the markets, the eligible producers will have right both to contracts with fixed price and to ‘’difference contracts’’ till the establishment of the Day Ahead Market (DAM) and of the Intraday Market (IM) on the platform of OPCOM. The contract for difference allows a better integration on eligible producers in the market. In the case of a contract for differences in two directions, the producers will receive the payment in the case of low market prices, but will have to return any surplus over the exercise price, in the case of high prices for electric energy.
The nomination of the Energy Market Operator M Ltd as a branch of OPCOM will contribute to the optimization of the electric energy market, promotion of transparency and competition, managing the risks and creating a friendly environment for investments.
This decision comes following joint efforts of the authorities from Moldova and Romania to consolidate and integrate the electric energy markets from the two countries, in order to ensure a transparent competition environment in the energy sector, through the signing of a Memorandum on 11 December 2023.
At the same time, this action is included in the national action plan for accession to the European Union and is an essential step in Moldova’s energy strategy till the 2030 year.
