Wildfires reported in southern Moldova

Chisinau, 22 February /MOLDPRES/ - Firemen on 21 February evening intervened in the liquidation of the fires of dry vegetation in the Etulia settlement, Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia. The flames compromised about 300 square metres of thicket.     

According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU), the call at the 112 Service was received at 18:29. A crew of firemen and rescuers was set to the spot, who established that the flames had compromised about 300 square metres of thicket. The IGSU employees managed to liquidate the fire at 19:00. All circumstances are to be established.  

In the context, IGSU repeatedly warns people about the risk of outburst of wildfires. Firemen warn citizens that the conditions of wind, low humidity and high air temperatures, which are not specific for the cold season, can favour the outburst of fire hotbeds and their spread on large areas, triggering big fires. Thus, rescuers urge the residents not to set fire to dry vegetation, household waste and thicket, in order to prevent fires. At the same time, people are asked not to throw matches, cigarettes or other burning objects on areas of dry grass, nearby forest areas and farmlands.     

According to IGSU’s statistics, in 2023, 4,870 interventions by firemen were registered to liquidate fires of dry vegetation, in the wake of which more than 11,600 hectares of lands were compromised.
