Moldova to receive grant worth 5.4 million euros on behalf of development partners for waste management

Chisinau, 23 February /MOLDPRES/ - Environment Minister Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov and the head of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in Moldova, Catarina Bjorlin Hansen, on 22 February in Chisinau signed an Agreement on Grant (E5P) worth 5.4 million euros between Moldova and EBRD on the financing of investment projects aimed at developing the infrastructure in the field of management of solid waste.
The E5P grant will co-finance the construction of a regional sanitary warehouse according to the European Union’s standards, which will include the infrastructure of sorting and obliteration in Donduseni, the construction of transfer stations in Briceni and Edinet, as well as the purchasing of equipment related to the integrated system of waste management.
This financing completes a sovereign loan of 25 million euros, provided by EBRD to Moldova’s government, which is part of a wider financial package, with an additional loan on behalf of the European Investment Bank (EIB) and investment grants on behalf other bilateral donors.
E5P is a multi-donor trust fund worth 242 million euros, initiated by Sweden, which operates all over the region of the Eastern Partnership. The E5P fund in Moldova totalizes 50 million euros and includes a contribution of one million euros on behalf of Moldova. The European Union is the biggest contributor, with 28.95 million euros. Other donors include the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Sweden.
EBRD is an important institutional investor in Moldova. So far, the Bank has invested more than 2 billion euros in Moldova through 160 projects, with 52 per cent of its portfolio in sustainable infrastructure.
