Moldova marks Earth Hour by turning off lights during one hour

Chisinau, 23 March /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova today marks the Earth Hour, in this way joining the actions backed in this respect internationally. Thus, today evening starting from 20:30 till 21:30, the illumination of the buildings of the public institutions and the street illumination is recommended to be turned off.
The action is aimed at raising the awareness of the electric energy consumers about the problem of the carbon dioxide emitted into the atmosphere at the production of electric energy, through the disconnection of the power supply for one hour.
„The Earth Hour has been marked since 2007, at an initiative by the World Wide Fund for Nature. According to it, annually in late March, beginning with 20:30 till 21:30, people from all over the world participate in the greatest global environmental action. Citizens from over 180 countries bring together at more events, in order to warn the mankind about the climate changes and the process of degradation of the biodiversity, soils, affecting of the water resources, forests and the food security.
In Moldova, the event has been marked since 2008. According to estimations, if all household consumers turned off the power supply during one hour, about 278,000 KW/ hour would be saved. As much as 86,800 cubic metres of natural gas is consumed for the production of this quantity of energy and 165 tons of greenhouse gas is emitted into the atmosphere following its burning.
