Moldova switches to summer time

12:43 | 30.03.2024 Category: Social

Chisinau, March 30 /MOLDPRES/- Moldova will switch to summer time on March 31, the last Sunday of this month. Thus, on the night of Saturday, 30 March, to Sunday, the clocks will be changed by one hour and 03:00 will become 04:00.

The switch to summer time is also taking place because our country's economy is connected to some elements of the European Single Market through the Moldova-EU Association Agreement.

Government spokesman Daniel Voda explained that the change of summer time is a practice adopted by several European countries. There are several reasons why this practice is implemented. One of them is to save energy. Specifically, adjusting the time can lead to electricity savings, especially in lighting, as people use less artificial light during long summer evenings.

Another reason is increased economic activity, or, long hours of daylight during summer evenings can boost economic and social activities as people have more time to spend outside and enjoy recreational activities.

At the same time, the adoption of daylight saving time can facilitate international communication and trade by ensuring better synchronisation of schedules between countries using the same practice.

Medical and psychological experts say the switch to summer time can influence the health and mood of many people, especially those with chronic illnesses.

The switch to summer time is being carried out in line with the proposal of the UN's European Economic Commission and EU member states.

In March 2019, MEPs voted to abandon the time change in the European Union from 2021. Each EU member state will be able to choose whether to remain on permanent "summer" or "winter" time.
