Chisinau, April 30 /MOLDPRES/- Cabinet of Ministers has approved several amendments to the Law on public monuments. The draft aims to decentralize the competence for the establishment of public monuments, the government's communication department has reported.
Thus, the local public administration authorities of the first and second level, as well as those of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia will have the power to decide on the establishment of monuments on the land they own. However, decisions can only be taken after approval of the Ministry of Culture.
Until now, the establishment of a monument at local level required the approval of the government. The granting of national protection status will remain a matter for parliament.
The draft also provides for the Government to initiate the procedure for dismantling public monuments with local protection status if they are contrary to public order or morality.
At the same time, the Monuments Inspection Agency will ensure compliance with the legislation on the protection of public monuments, will be able to issue fines and issue a plan to remedy illegal works on public monuments.
