Moldovan president's message on World Press Freedom Day

Chisinau, May 3 /MOLDPRES/ - Free press means the guarantee of a democratic society. President Maia Sandu made the statement on World Press Freedom Day.

On this occasion, the official congratulated and thanked all journalists who do their work honestly and serve the public interest.

"To be an honest journalist is to be a free journalist. We need as many well-trained journalists as possible, free to inform citizens about what is important for society and courageous in exposing corruption, no matter who commits it. Free press is the guarantee of a democratic society," said Maia Sandu.

Every year on 3 May, World Press Freedom Day is celebrated around the world, marking the fundamental principles of press freedom and paying tribute to journalists who have lost their lives during their work. This day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993, following a recommendation adopted at the 26th session of the UNESCO General Conference in 1991.
