Chisinau, 16 May /MOLDPRES/ - The citizens will answer the question ‘’Are you for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union?’’ on 20 October 2024. The parliament today adopted a decision on the holding of the republican constitutional referendum.
The draft law for the amendment of Moldova’s Constitution, expressed by the question ‘’Do you support the amendment of the Constitution for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union,’’ will be subjected to referendum.
The draft on the amendment of Moldova’s Constitution provides for the completion of the Constitution with two new paragraphs, which reconfirm the European identity of the people of Moldova and of the irreversibility of the country’s European integration way. Also, Moldova’s integration into the European Union will be declared as the country’s strategic objective.
The document also envisages the Constitution’s completion with a new title – ‘’Integration into the European Union.’’ Thus, a proposal is made that Moldova’s accession to the constitutive treaties of the European Union, as well as the access to the acts on the revision of the constitutive treaties of the European Union should be carried out by the parliament through organic law. At the same time, the provisions of the constitute treaties of the European Union, as well as of the other compulsory legal acts of the European Union should have priority against the contrary stipulations from the domestic laws, with the observance of the provisions of the act on accession.
The republican constitutional referendum will be organized at an initiative by President Maia Sandu. The initiative on the revision of Moldova’s Constitution was signed by 46 MPs and was approved by the Constitutional Court.
