Chisinau, May 22 /MOLDPRES/ - The Republic of Moldova is committed to promoting a competitive and sustainable energy sector integrated into European energy markets, thus ensuring energy security and affordability for consumers. The message was delivered in Brussels by Energy Minister Victor Parlicov, who attended the 8th meeting of the EU - Moldova Association Council.

"Moldova will contribute to strengthening regional energy security and integration of energy markets, through active involvement in the North-South gas corridor and the construction of new 400 kV interconnection with Romania and therefore, with the EU," Parlicov said.

Parlicov said that the priorities in the energy sector are to promote energy efficiency, increase cross-border electricity and gas interconnection capacities, diversify energy supply sources and use the potential of locally generated renewable energy.

The Minister of Energy, together with Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popsoi and Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian took part in a joint discussion on energy security in the Transnistrian region.

In the context of the expiry of the contract on the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine, Parlicov stressed the need to maintain stability in the Transnistrian region. In this regard, the minister said that the right bank will not obstruct the supply of gas from Gazprom to the left bank of the Dniester, even after the expiry of the transit contract, but if the gas cannot be transported from the east on the traditional route, it will be necessary to find an alternative route, such as the vertical corridor, to which the Republic of Moldova has recently joined.
