Census 2024// Over 2 million people questioned, census-taking exceeds 90 per cent in Moldova

Chisinau, 21 June /MOLDPRES/ - Census was taken of about 1 million 623,000 dwellings (including the occupied, secondary and non-occupied ones) and about 2 million 377,000 people within the population and housing census till late on 20 June, this year. The director-general of the National Statistics Bureau (BNS), Oleg Cara, today unveiled preliminary data to this effect.   

He noted that the number of people of whom census had been taken included both people with usual residence and those without usual residence in Moldova, including eventual doublings, which will be identified at the processing phase.

According to the quoted source, in most districts, the accelerated pace of census-taking exceeded the figure of 96 per cent and the lowest level was of 92 per cent.  

According to the BNS director, a slower pace of census-taking is recorded in the districts of Basarabeasca, Cahul, Calarasi, Cimislia, Dubasari, Causeni and Ialoveni and in over 300 settlements, the census-taking is close to the end, with the last acts of covering the census data covered here.  

„As far as the Chisinau municipality is concerned, slower paces are in the Centru, Rascani and Buiucani districts, as well as in the suburbs Stauceni, Codru and Ghidighici. The process is unfolding more actively in the settlements of Cruzesti, Budesti, Bacioi and Condrita,’’ Cara noted.       

The BNS head urged the Moldovan residents, who still have not participated in the census, to take connection with census-takers, in order to fix the date and time of the interview in in proximal terms.   

The population and housing census was launched on 8 April and will be held till 7 July, this year. On this time interval, about 4,000 census takers are to go from home to home, in order to collect data about the population and its characteristic features, such as the age, gender, ethnic affiliation, education level, occupation, as well as dwellings and living conditions, such as the endowment with the sewerage and water supply system, way of heating, etc.    

The census is conducted once in ten years and is an activity with a national scale, which provides the full demographic picture of the country. The data collected following the census will provide information for the working out of public, national and local policies, needed for Moldova’s economic and social development.
