Weimar Triangle countries committed to ensure Moldova's European integration

Chisinau, 21 June /MOLDPRES/ - Germany, France and Poland, - member countries of the Weimar Triangle, - are committed to ensure the way of European integration of Moldova and Ukraine. Representatives of the Weimar Triangle member states conveyed assurances to this effect, following a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov in Chisinau.    

„The support of the European integration path by such states as Germany, Poland and France is essential, especially as we face, in continuation, more ordeal from abroad to undermine the country’s European integration way, in the context of the referendum due in next autumn,’’ Cristina Gherasimov said.    

The official stressed that the participants in the meeting had reiterated the firm commitment to continue the reforms, in order to prepare the country to become member of the European family.  

„We have close friendship relations with those three countries. Today, we met on a special day – when President Maia Sandu signed the Decree on the initiation of the negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the European Union and the government approved the general position of negotiation of Moldova. The country will officially start the process of negotiations on accession to EU - this is a historical step. A huge effort comes next on behalf of all state’s institutions, in order to fully align with the European standards, for the benefit of the citizens. We today discussed the recent developments on the European integration path. We found out that those nine recommendations had been successfully fulfilled and we can switch to the next step. At the same time, we finished the first stage of the national legislation’s screening with the EU’s one. We are firmly committed to continue the reforms in the justice sector, the economic one, infrastructure. It is important that the country continues to have access to the European programmes, in order to edify the European Moldova at home. It is important that we know that the friends are with us in this complex process,’’ Cristina Gherasimov noted.       

The news conference brought together ministers from the Weimar Triangle: State Minister for Europe and Climate of Germany Anna Lührmann, Minister for European Union of Poland Adam Szłapka and Ambassador of France to Moldova  Graham Paul. The three officials reiterated the support for the country’s European integration, stressing that ’’Moldova has never been so closer to EU.’’

„Cleary, Moldova belongs to the European Union. The intergovernmental conference due on 25 June this year confirms the commitment of Moldova’s government and of the European Union in the accession process. I am impressed by the progress of the reforms carried out, despite all crises, including in the justice sector, which is an important echelon in the process of integration into EU. Germany, France and Poland are committed to ensure the way of European integration of Moldova and Ukraine. It is quite important that the citizens are united in the European perspective and back the European path at the referendum, due in next autumn,’’ Anna Lührmann said.    

For his part, Adam Szłapka said that Moldova had never been so close to EU. ‘’We will provide the strongest support in the process of integration into EU. We are impressed by the reforms carried out in the last three years,’’ the official noted. As for the referendum on the accession to EU, Adam Szłapka said that ‘’the Moldovans will take a decisions which will change the future of the country and of its citizens.’’

„We commit to support Moldova in the process of integration into EU, where the peace and sovereignty, guaranteeing of human rights persists. We are ready to ensure the resilience against the hybrid threats. We support the discussions, in order to better understand the problems and to find solutions. The intergovernmental conference is a very important event. We are firmly sure that Moldova will join the European Union; the country’s citizens deserve this,’’ Ambassador of France to Moldova Graham Paul said.  

The Weimar Triangle is a format of trilateral cooperation, launched in 1991, which includes France, Germany and Poland. Among the subjects they promote at present, there are the support of Ukraine and the enlargement of the European Union.
