Chisinau, 19 July /MOLDPRES/ - Several settlements from the southern Leova district have received modern equipment for the collection and management of waste. It is about the villages of Tigheci, Baius and Sarata Noua, who together applied for the Eu4Moldova Local Communities project.

With the European Union’s assistance, these communities will benefit from 5,000 dumping carts; a truck for the collection of waste; a mini-bus for improvement of logistic operations; a buldo excavator for the management of the waste deposit; video supervision systems; diverse operational equipment for waste.

According to the Environment Ministry, the project represents an example of good practices for other settlements of Moldova, proving that the mayoralties can find efficient solutions for the waste management even with poor financial resources. Over 13,000 local residents will now benefit from better sanitation services, thus contributing to the settlements’ cleanliness and comfort.

„We thank the development partners, the European Union’s Delegation in Moldova, the governments of Germany, Austria and Poland, which back the efforts of our country’s government to provide the citizens with sanitation conditions and services, thus contributing to a cleaner environment, without waste thrown in forests, on banks of rivers and lakes,’’ Environment Minister Sergiu Lazarencu said at the ceremony on the equipment’s delivery.

According to the National Waste Management Programme from Moldova, the Leova district is part of the Waste Management Area 2 (ZMD2). Financing has been recently identified for the carrying out of a feasibility study in this area, as well as in ZMD3. ‘’This initiative is an important step towards a cleaner and sounder environment for all Moldova’s citizens,’’ Lazarencu noted.

The Eu4Moldova Local Communities project, backed by the European Union, German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Austrian Development Agency and Polish assistance, is aimed at improving the living standards and approaching the economic and social impact of COVID-19 in the chosen Moldovan communities, thus promoting their long-term resilience.

The main goals of the project consist in improving the quality of local public services and enhancing the access to the social, economic and technical infrastructure for the men and women from the communities selected. Besides, the project is set to stimulate the business opportunities and of jobs, promote the development led by the community, to create an environment of support for the implementation of the LEADER National Programme and to consolidate the operational capacities of the Local Action Groups (GAL) and the LAEDER National Network.
