Moldovan president, environment minister discuss national programme on afforestation, problems of environment

Chisinau, 20 August /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today met Environment Minister Sergiu Lazarencu. The officials discussed the biggest programme in the environment sector – national programme on afforestation, the presidential press service has reported.
„Since the beginning of the programme’s launch, we have planted forest on an area of almost 11,000 hectares. We managed to increase the areas planted 2.5-fold more than earlier. Our goal is ambitious, but crucial for improving the quality of the environment – to extend and rehabilitate 145,000 hectares of forest till 2032,’’ the head of state said.
Maia Sandu noted that, during visits paid to districts, a major problem raised represented the unauthorized dumps. ‘’The minister informed me about the process of preparation for the initiation, in 2025, of the construction of the first regional centres for the collection and sorting of waste, which will cover the needs of the districts of Ungheni, Calarasi, Nisporeni, Edinet, Donduseni, Briceni and Ocnita,’’ the head of state also said.
The Moldovan president specified that the ensuring of a clean environment, which we bequeath to the children, dealt with each of us. The head of state said that over 100 projects were under implementation from the National Environment Fund.The projects are meant for the desilting of lakes and rivers, arrangement and rehabilitation of parks, endowment of settlements with technology and equipment for waste management.
