Chisinau, 28 August /MOLDPRES/ - Ambassador of the European Union to Moldova Janis Mazeiks and Ad-interim Charge d’affaires of the United States in Moldova Nina Maria Fite have conveyed congratulatory messages, in the context of the marking of Moldova’s Independence Day.

„Today, we celebrate 33 years since the declaring of Moldova’s independence. During these three decades, you have had doubts, you had to make choices, but you made important progress. These 33 years showed that you enjoy a firm support. This is the first year when the Moldovans can think differently about the Independence Day; now, after the starting of the negotiations on accession to EU, you are on the way to become EU member state,’’ the European official said.

The ambassador noted that the Moldovan citizens may wonder whether, after joining EU, Moldova would strengthen its independence or would lose it, in its capacity of EU member state. ‘’ This is a question which put the citizens of all member and candidate countries. And the answer, as you have seen, is that their independence was consolidated. They became part of a great and strong family. In this family, the voice of the smallest matters as much as the voice of the biggest,’’ Janis Mazeiks said.

The diplomat referred to the next autumn referendum. ‘’In next October, you will take a historical decision at a referendum; you will choose the future, by deciding whether you will join EU. This choice will define the country’s way for the next generations as well,’’ the ambassador stressed.

The official also said that he had the honour to visit the hall where the Declaration of Independence had been signed. ‘’I stayed by the side of some courageous personalities who signed the Declaration, as well as by the side of a group of enthusiastic young people who represent Moldova’s future. This was a special experience and a memento of the road covered by Moldova and of the relation between generations. The signatories to the declaration proclaimed the country’s independence. It is up to you to make it stronger. As you advance on the European integration path, EU stays resolute to be with you and to back you as a true friend. Congratulations, Moldova!’’ Janis Mazeiks said.

Ad-interim Charge d’affaires of the United States in Moldova Nina Maria Fite also came up with a congratulatory message ‘’Dear citizens of Moldova! I was given honour to represent the United States as charge d’affaires in Moldova during almost two months and in this short period, I was deeply impressed by the beauty, uniqueness and warmth of the people from Moldova. On behalf of the Embassy of the USA, I convey the sincerest congratulations to Moldova, its citizens on the occasion of the marking of the 33rd anniversary of the Independence Day,’’ the official said.

Nina Maria Fite said that ‘’the independence and sovereignty of Moldova are vital, especially as you continue to build your way towards democracy, prosperity and security for all citizens.’’ The diplomat  gave assurances that the United States stayed firmly committed to cooperate with Moldova, in order to support the country’s continuous progress and the achievement of the common goals.

„Today we mark also the lasting friendship between our two countries. This relation is witness of our common aspirations and of the sustainable relations between our nations. Congratulations on the Independence Day, Moldova! ‘’ Ad-interim Charge d’affaires of the United States in Moldova Nina Maria Fite added.

Moldova on 27 August marked the 33rd anniversary of the proclamation of its Independence, voted by the parliament on 27 August 1991.
