Moldovan energy minister says prices for energy in Moldova correlated with prices in region

Chisinau, 16 September /MOLDPRES/ - Moldova used the energy crisis started in 2021 as catalyst for the development of the energy sector and at present, the country is much more attractive for investors. Energy Minister Victor Parlicov has made statements to this effect at the Moldova Business Week, noting that the prices for energy in Moldova were presently correlated with the prices in the region.    

Victor Parlicov said that, in the last two years, an important leap had been made in the energy sector of Moldova, including the synchronization with the ENTSO-E European energy system, as well as important progress in the adjusting of the legislation to the European one and the liberalization of the energy markets.  

„During 30 years, Moldova very much depended on Russia; we cannot imagine that major investments can occur in such conditions, as we did not see investments on behalf of Russia too. Yet, the things have changed; we transposed the EU’s Acquis; we have become best known to investors in terms of energy,’’ Parlicov said.  

The minister said that said that, in October-November 2022, Moldova had gone through a pretty difficult period. Gazprom cut the volumes of gas unilaterally, the infrastructure from Ukraine was destroyed; MGRES (Kuchurgan power station) was not providing the country with energy; yet, Moldova proved that it can be resilient to this so complicated scenario and the prices for energy in Moldova are correlated to the prices from the region.    

Victor Parlicov noted that the first tender for the construction of big photovoltaic and wind parks, with an overall capacity of 165 MW, was underway and the interest of investors in this opportunity would be a test for the sector’s attractiveness.    

Moldova Business Week 2024 is regarded as the most important international economic event of the year. It was launched in Chisinau and brings together over 1,000 business people, investors and experts, who will explore the country’s economic potential.
