Draft Composition of New European Commission Features 11 Women, Including Bulgarian Ekaterina Zaharieva

Sofia, 17 sep. /BTA/. There are eleven women in the draft structure of the new European Commission, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said  on Tuesday in Strasbourg. Among them is Ekaterina Zaharieva, who will be responsible for startups, research and innovation.

Ursula von der Leyen presented the structure of the future EC and the distribution of responsibilities of the new European Commissioners after meeting with the Conference of Presidents of the European Parliament, including the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola and the leaders of the political groups.
At a press conference in Strasbourg, Ursula von der Leyen explained that the draft structure of the new EC is based on its political priorities, like competitiveness, security and digitalization.

"I know that you are very interested in the structure but allow me to speak first about the content that defines the structure. Together, we have defined core priorities. They are built around prosperity, security, democracy. The backdrop is: competitiveness in the twin transition, and they are very much intertwined and cross-cutting," said Von der Leyen.

All candidates will go through hearings with MEPs who must approve their candidacy. The new European Commission is due to take office by the end of the year.
