Chisinau, Sep 24 /MOLDPRES/- Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA) Vladimir Bolea signed on Tuesday the official letters addressed to the 27 Ministers of Agriculture of the European Union, the USA, Canada, Japan and Norway, requesting support for the establishment of a Development and Solidarity Fund for Moldovan agriculture, the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA) said in a statement.

Bolea is on a working visit to Brussels for "strategic" talks on cooperation between Moldova and the European Union in the agricultural sector and support for farmers affected by natural disasters.

In his statement in Brussels, Bolea underlined the importance of coordinated support from EU member countries for the agricultural sector in Moldova to progress and contribute to the economic stability of the region. The official emphasized that the fund would not only be an economic support, but also a gesture of solidarity and partnership between the European Union and the Republic of Moldova.

The initiative of this fund was also discussed later in the meeting with European Commissioner for Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski, as a reaction to the growing challenges faced by Moldovan farmers, affected by severe drought and climate change in recent years.

The Development and Solidarity Fund aims to provide financial support to farmers, modernize agricultural infrastructure, promote technological innovation and increase resilience to extreme climatic conditions, which affect the productivity and stability of agriculture in the country.
