Chisinau, 27 September /MOLDPRES/ - The European Union will construct a bridge across the Prut river, which will connect the settlements Ungheni from Moldova and Ungheni of Romania. The works for building the bridge will be carried out by a Romanian company and will be financed from European funds. The contract on the construction of the bridge was signed in Ungheni today, in the presence of officials from both banks of the Prut river.

„We today attended a moment which the Ungheni city and the entire Moldova have been expecting since the Bridge of Flowers in 1990s. While the generation of our parents, 34 years ago, edified a bridge of flowers, we will be the generation which builds bridges, in order to ease our connection between the two banks of the Prut river,’’ Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu said at the event on the signing of the contract.

According to the Moldovan parliament speaker, this event is one more step which ‘’proves that we are part of the great European family and that our place is in the European Union.’’ ‘’With the help of Romania and being member of this family, we will make sure, so that Moldova will never be isolated and that our citizens will have the same living standards, incomes and freedom of movement as the citizens of the European Union,’’ Igor Grosu said.

„A historical moment in Ungheni today. The contract for the construction of the first bridge in highway regime between Romania and Moldova was signed. I participated, along with the officials from both banks of the Prut river, in this event of a special significance for the relation between the two countries. The designing and the implementation will last 24 months and the bridge will be part of the Union Highway A8, as well as of the highway segment which will connect Ungheni with Chisinau. Our common goal is to move from Bucharest to Chisinau on highway in 2030,’’ the state secretary of the Department for Moldova (DRRM) at the Romanian government, Adrian Dupu, said.

„One more good news; it is also about bridges. The bridge across the Prut river, which will connect the settlements Ungheni from Romania and Ungheni from Moldova, will be soon constructed. The contract between the National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration from Romania and Ness Proiect Europe Ltd company, the firm due to carry out the works, was signed in Ungheni today,’’ Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Andrei Spinu wrote on his Facebook account.

The signing of the contract took place at the Regional Forum for Transformation and Integration (FRATI), which brought together central and local public authorities and entrepreneurs from Romania and Moldova.

The Ungheni – Ungheni bridge is part of the Union Highway, which connects the cities of Targu Mures – Iasi – Ungheni – Chisinau and represents the point of connection of the road network from Moldova with the network of highways of the European Union. The project’s overall value is of 33 million euros and the works are scheduled to be finished in three years.

In late last July, National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration from Romania (CNAIR) selected the firm which will construct the bridge across the Prut river in Ungheni. According to CNAIR, the financing of the construction will be provided from non-refundable European funds through the Connecting Europe Facility. The new bridge across the Prut river will be endowed with border control points, car parks and areas of verification for trucks.
