As many as 2,061 national, international observers to monitor elections in Moldova due on 20 October

Chisinau, 18 October /MOLDPRES/ - The elections for the office of Moldova’s president and the republican constitutional referendum due on next Sunday, 20 October, will be monitored by 2,061 national and international observers. The Central Electoral Commission today accredited the last observers who are to monitor the ballot.
According to CEC, those 1,277 national observers represent five public associations from Moldova. Most observers were accredited at a request by the Promo-LEX Association.
At the same time, the Commission accredited 784 international observers. They represent 24 diplomatic missions accredited in Moldova (186 people), 14 foreign electoral authorities (24 people), two international associations (four people).
Thus, election observation mission on behalf of OSCE/ODIHR (Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights) will be represented by 253 people, on behalf of the European Network of Election Monitoring Organizations (ENEMO) – 49 people, Parliament of Ukraine – 11 people, European Platform for Democratic Elections – 16 people, Parliamentary Assembly of the Black See Economic Cooperation (BSEC) - three people, International Organization of La Francophonie – six people, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly – 51 people, European Parliament – 16 people, Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe – 32 people, SILBA (Initiative for Dialogue and Democracy) – 36 people, IFES (International Foundation for Electoral Systems) – 15 people, IRI (International Republican Institute) - 37 people, National Democratic Institute, Chisinau branch – 36 people, IDEA – three people, General Consulate of Turkey – six people.
Most national observers were accredited by the national constituency electoral councils.
Contacted by MOLDPRES, the head of the CEC’s communication, public relations and mass media department, Rodica Sirbu, said that the acts on the accreditation of the observers for monitoring the elections could be submitted till 13 October.
„Following the submission of the applications, CEC issued decisions on people’s accreditation. On the day of elections, the observers will monitor the voting procedure, the counting of the ballot papers and the tabulation of the results,’’ Rodica Sirbu noted.
The presidential elections will be held on 20 October 2024. On the same day, a republican constitutional referendum will take place, during which the citizens will have to answer the question: ‘’Do you support the amendment of the Constitution for Moldova’s accession to the European Union?’’
