Chisinau, Dec. 5 /MOLDPRES/- Moldova will have a consulate in Chicago. Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi announced that it would be opened in the first half of 2025.
The official discussed with Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs John Bass on the issue at a meeting held recently in Washington.
The decision to open a new consulate comes as a result of numerous requests from Moldovan citizens living in the United States. The consulate will support Moldovan citizens, facilitate their access to consular services and strengthen ties with the Moldovan community in the region.
The head of Moldovan diplomacy thanked John Bass for the US approval of the Foreign Ministry's request.
"This gives us the opportunity to expand the consular presence of the Republic of Moldova in the US. At the same time, I discussed with John Bass about strengthening the Strategic Dialogue with the United States of America. In this regard, we agreed to launch a new stage in the bilateral relationship between Moldova and the US - the initiation of negotiations for advancing towards a Strategic Partnership, focusing on strengthening security, energy resilience and economic development," said Popșoi.
At the end of the meeting, Popșoi thanked the US for the constant assistance provided to the Republic of Moldova, which has significantly contributed to the improvement of the living conditions of Moldovan citizens.
Popșoi is on a working visit to Washington on 2-9 December 2024.
