EU informs about support worth 60 million euros for Moldova

Chisinau, 10 December /MOLDPRES/ - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen today informed about a support worth 60 million euros for Moldova. The money is provided for the justice system’s reform and economic stability. The European official made statements to this effect following a meeting with President Maia Sandu in Brussels.   

Ursula von der Leyen said that she was looking forward to the opening of the negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the European Union in the 2025 year.

„President Maia Sandu fights for Moldova’s European future with her heart and soul. We are fully with you. Today, we announced 50 million euros to back the reforms and the economic stability. Also, we are looking forward to the opening of an essential group of negotiations on accession in the 2025 year,’’ Ursula von der Leyen stressed.  

The European official referred also to the reformation of the justice system. ‘’Moldova commits to reform its justice system on its way to EU. The evaluation of the integrity of the judges and prosecutors is essential for ensuring the rule of law state. We discussed a roadmap, in order to speed up the verification of judges and increased the EU’s support for this to 10 million euros,’’ Ursula von der Leyen said.   

For her part, President Maia Sandu said that, in Brussels, she had discussed with Ursula von der Leyen the reforms which got Moldova closer to EU.

„We agreed on accelerating the justice reform. The evaluation of the integrity of the judges and prosecutors stays priority. We move to the European Union, as we want a better living for each of us and our European friends are with us in this effort. We also discussed the European investments which improve the Moldovans’ living through the creation of jobs, roads’ modernization, development of villages and consolidation of the energy security. Together, we build a European Moldova, so that each citizen feels a change for the better,’’ Maia Sandu said.  

President Maia Sandu on 10-11 December pays a working visit to Brussels, in order to meet the new leadership of the European institutions.   

The visit’s agenda includes meetings with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, European Council President António Costa, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. The visit shows Moldova’s renewed commitment to advance on the way of accession to the European Union and to improve the living standards through a close cooperation with the European partners.     

President Maia Sandu will discuss the integration of Moldova’s economy in the single European market, investments’ attraction, financing of infrastructure projects and backing small- and medium-sized enterprises, in order to create well-paid jobs and improve the people’s living.   

The agenda also comprises the continuation of the reforms in justice, combating corruption and consolidation of the rule of law state. President Sandu will also put emphasis on the energy security and providing of stable energy resources for all residents. At the visit, the head of state also has scheduled a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The officials will tackle the Moldova-NATO relations, - a partnership of 30 years, as well as aspects concerning the regional security.
