Chisinau, 10 December /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu has paid an official visit to the Headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), in Brussels, marking the 30th anniversary of the Moldova-NATO Partnership for Peace. This partnership contributed to a safer environment for the citizens, to the strengthening of the army’s defence capacities and to the resilience of the Moldovan society on the whole, the presidential press service has reported.

At the visit, the head of state had a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The discussions were focused on the regional security, hybrid threats – including the interference with the elections and the electoral corruption – and on the need of joint actions for the protection of the democracies in the region.

Addressing the North Atlantic Council (NAC), the main decision-taking structure of the NATO, made up of representatives of 32 member states, President Maia Sandu emphasized Moldova’s efforts to maintain peace and stability with a war at the border and to consolidate its resilience against the hybrid threats. The head of state drew attention to the tactics of foreign interference with the democratic processes, as well as the illicit financing of parties and the manipulation of information, which undermine the democracy and the citizens’ trust. The Moldovan president also highlighted the importance of the international cooperation for the defence of the democracies in the world and promotion of peace.

The visit to the NATO’s Headquarters emphasizes Moldova’s commitment to cooperate with the partner countries, in order to ensure the citizens’ security, protect the democratic processes in Moldova and consolidate its role of reliable partner in the regional security.
