Chisinau, 20 June /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu has come up with a message on the World Refugee Day, marked on 20 June. The head of state stressed that, starting from February 2022, this day had acquired a special significance, the presidential press service has reported.

Since the beginning of Russia’s invasion in Ukraine, Moldova’s borders have been crossed by millions of Ukrainian refugees and tens of thousands remained to look for shelter and hide from war in Moldova. The Moldovan president also said that the Ukrainian refugees had found hope, solidarity and empathy in Moldova and Moldovans opened their homes for those who remained without houses.

„Today we honoured all refugees who left their country because of wars, persecutions, violence at an event organized at the Vasili Suhomlinski Theoretical Lyceum from the Edinet city. Here, 11 Ukrainian children go to school along with Moldovan children and, together with their families, they are important members of the local community. Through care and understanding for those who are sadder than we, we show the strongest side of the humanity. The more the community members care for each other, the stronger the community is,’’ the head of state said.

The president noted that Moldova would continue helping the neighbour Ukrainians, integrating the refugees in the social and economic life of the country and provide them with safety. ‘’We are looking forward to the day when Ukraine will release its country and the refugees will be able to peacefully return home, where the peace will reign and will be free to rebuild their country,’’ the head of state added.
