Chisinau, July 4. /MOLDPRES/- President Maia Sandu met with Niels Annen, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development yesterday. The German official came to Chisinau on the occasion of the negotiations regarding the Moldovan-German technical and financial cooperation for 2023-2024, the presidential press service has reported.
The sides discussed the challenges facing our citizens and the government's reform agenda. Maia Sandu appreciated the close partnership that our country has with the authorities in Berlin and the effective bilateral cooperation for the development and modernization of the country that we benefit from through the programs of the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ). For over three decades, Germany has supported the transformation efforts of the Republic of Moldova by financing projects related to good governance, regional development, agriculture, energy efficiency, and in the defense and public order. In 2022, the Federal Government granted us budget support to manage the energy crisis in the amount of 40 million euros, money that went to offset citizens' bills.
The head of state emphasized that Russia's war against Ukraine has serious consequences for the country's economy and our society. So that the authorities in Chisinau can increase the resilience of the economy in the face of challenges, we are counting even further on Germany's help. The Moldovan-German negotiations take place once every two years, during which the project proposals and the financial commitments of the German side for the next period are formalized. Germany will provide us with assistance in the following areas: sustainable economic development, training and employment, capacity building of small and medium-sized businesses, climate and energy, and other important sectors.
