Center for Strategic Communication and Countering Disinformation to be set up in Moldova

Chisinau, July 14. /MOLDPRES/- The Center for Strategic Communication and Countering Disinformation will be set up in Moldova. The draft was voted today by the Parliament in the first reading by 56 deputies.
The legislative initiative belongs to President Maia Sandu and was announced on May 29.
The center will aim at strengthening cooperation between institutions in the fight against disinformation, manipulation of information and foreign interference, which pose a danger or may harm national security and endanger the achievement of national interests. The institution will implement the necessary measures to ensure the security of the information space and to increase the degree of resilience of society to threats.
The center will be led by a director, appointed by the Parliament, at the proposal of the President of the Republic of Moldova, for a period of 5 years. The director's candidacy will be selected following a public competition organized by the head of state. The director will be assisted by a deputy, appointed by the president of the country, upon the proposal of the director of the Center.
The parliament through the specialized parliamentary committees will carry out control over the center's activity.
The draft law is to be voted on in the second reading.
