Chisinau, July 17. /MOLDPRES/- The capital of the Republic of Moldova, the city of Chisinau, today turned 587 years since the first documentary attestation.
The first documentary mention of the city as a locality dates from July 17, 1436 (Chisinau lui Acbaș). The second documentary mention, in chronological order, dates from 1466, in the property document, issued by Ștefan cel Mare, confirming to his uncle Vlaicu Pârcălab de Cetatea Albă the entire estate and mill.
In the Middle Ages, the village of Chisinau was densely populated. Gradually, the city becomes an important commercial center, in which fair trade is strengthened. The residents have lived through more difficult times. Chisinau was devastated by Turks and Tatars. The Russian-Turkish wars of the 18th and 19th centuries caused a lot of damage and ruined the city.
Chisinau is gradually expanding territorially towards the current bd. Stefan cel Mare, then called Moskovskaia Street. In 1830-1836, the Cathedral with the bell tower was built and the foundation of a public garden was laid. The growth of the city made the villages of Buiucani, Schinoasa, Tăbăcaria, Mălina become suburbs of Chişinău in the 1830-1840s.
Currently, the capital of the country has a population of about 600 thousand citizens. Chisinau hosts the embassies of many states, representatives of some international institutions and bodies. Meetings, world scientific conferences, exhibitions and fairs are held here. The local body of state power is the City Hall (Municipal Council).
This year, on the occasion of the 587th anniversary of the first documentary attestation of the city, the municipality organized the festival "Te salut, Chisinau!", which takes place on July 14-17 in the center of the capital. The event's agenda includes various cultural events.
