Chisinau, 23 August /MOLDPRES/ - The president of the People’s Assembly (APG) (local parliament) of the Gagauz-Yeri Autonomous Territorial Unit, Dmitri Constantinov, has made press statements, saying that ‘’he does not rule out the creation of a Gagauz republic,’’ more sources have told MOLDPRES.
According to Constantinov, ‘’the people would demand’’ this, noting that the ‘’the central authorities of Moldova pretty ignore the laws of the autonomy.’’
Also, the APG speaker informed that an assembly of the local authorities of various levels from the autonomy would take place on 9 September, during which this subject might be tackled.
The autonomous region, Gagauz-Yeri Autonomous Territorial Unit, was set up in Moldova in early 1990s, in order to protect the rights of the Gagauz minority. In 1994, the Moldovan parliament approved the law on the special legal status of Gagauzia, which established an administrative structure, including a local parliament, an executive branch led by a governor (bashkan) and specific autonomous powers for the region.
