Chisinau, 6 September /MOLDPRES/ - The rehabilitation of the railways and the switch from the Soviet gauge to the European one is one of the priorities of the project on railroad infrastructure, financially backed by the European Union. Infrastructure and Regional Development Minister Andrei Spinu has made statements to this effect at the Romanian TV station Digi 24, where he referred to the projects on interconnection between Moldova and the European Union, through Romania.
„An important project deals with the railway. We must, on the one hand, rehabilitate what we have and, on the other hand, apply for the change of the gauge and probably, for a high-speed train due to connect Chisinau and Bucharest,’’ the official said.
At the same time, Spinu noted that the change of the gauge should occur in parallel with Ukraine, where it is also of Soviet model. Or, our exit to the European Union is also in this area, the infrastructure and regional development minister said.
Moldova is the only non-EU member state included through a European project on interconnection, which will receive financing worth 2 billion euros.
