Chisinau, 7 September /MOLDPRES/ - The Moldovan diplomacy head, Nicu Popescu, has received the visit by Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Affairs, Foreign Trade and Federal Cultural Institutions of Belgium Hadja Lahbib. This visit marks a special moment in Moldova’s relation with Belgium - inauguration of this country’s Embassy in Chisinau. This will contribute to the development and consolidation of the political, economic and cultural relations between the two states, the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry’s (MAEIE) press service has reported.

At the meeting, the officials discussed in detail the process of Moldova’s accession to EU. The sides stressed that Moldova had made significant progress in the implementation of those nine recommendations of the European Commission. In this respect, we rely on Belgium’s support in starting the negotiations on accession to EU till the end of this year.

„We discussed, at the same time, the presidency of Belgium at the Council of the European Union in the first half of the 2024 year and I expressed confidence that our Belgian friends will back us on this crucial period.

We spoke also about the fourth edition of the Moldova Support Platform, which will take place in Chisinau in next October. This is an essential instrument to help Moldova in overcoming multiple crises from 2022. We now want to focus on the needs of long-term development, including the economic resilience, energy security and infrastructure.

I emphasized Moldova’s commitment to actively contribute to the European security and stability through the continuous support of Ukraine against the Russian aggression, as well as through active participation of our country’s representatives in EU’s civil missions.

I appreciated the Belgian government’s openness to contribute to the modernization of our rural regions through projects of the BOSAQ Company in the field of residents’ supply with qualitative drinking water.

During those over 30 years of diplomatic relations, the Kingdom of Belgium has proved to be a valuable partner for Moldova and the new Embassy of Belgium with headquarters in Chisinau will be crucial for the consolidation of our relations.’’ Foreign Affairs Minister Nicu Popescu said.
