Chisinau, 5 October /MOLDPRES/ - The European Parliament today voted a resolution initiated by European lawmaker Siegfried Muresan, thereby demanding the starting of the negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the European Union till the end of this year.

The resolution was voted by majority vote: 448 votes for, 45 against and 43 abstentions.

“Moldova’s citizens want to live, just as we, in freedom and in democracy. And we want to convey quite clearly: one day, Moldova will be member of the European Union and its citizens will have the same rights and opportunities as all citizens from the other European Union member states. And therefore, through this resolution, we, the European Parliament, demand the starting of the negotiations on Moldova’s accession to the European Union till the end of this year,’’ Muresan wrote on his page.

In the resolution, the MEPs asked for the growth in the European financial and technical support for Moldova; increase in the number of people who deal with Moldova in the European institutions and creating a special unit for Moldova at the level of the European Commission; permanent liberalization of the trade with the European Union; strengthening of the EU-Moldova relations at the parliamentary level through the creation of a resident representative of the European Parliament in Moldova’s parliament and vice versa; Moldova’s integration into the Single European Market just before the finishing of the negotiations on accession.

More European MPs have earlier informed that they wanted the starting of the negotiations on Moldova’s accession to EU till the end of this year and believed that Moldova was ready for this process.
