Moldovan president says freedom of press represents key element of democracy

Chisinau, 4 December /MOLDPRES/ - President Maia Sandu today participated in the eighth edition of the Mass Media Forum. At the event, she congratulated all journalists on the very good result achieved in the World Press Freedom Index this year, within which Moldova ranked 28th out of 180 countries, along with the advanced democracies, the presidential press service has reported.
The head of state stressed that this place was due to the huge work of the honest journalists, as well as the authorities’ efforts from the last period.
The Moldovan president noted that more requests formulated at the previous forums had been settled: the national plan on the sector’s development for 2023-2026 was approved and a new law was adopted, which is to improve the access to the public interest information. Also, the government approved a decision, through which the Culture Ministry took over the power of coordination of the public policies in the mass media field. At the same time, the head of state said that it was still much work to do, in order to lay the foundations of the education for media, so that each citizen is able to distinguish between truthful information and fakes and not let him/herself be manipulated.
„The press freedom represents a key element of the democracy. The free press is an efficient means of combating the propaganda and misinformation, which are particularly dangerous in the context in the context of the hybrid attacks. I thank those who work with self-denial, in order to objectively inform people. We are determined to work together, in order to protect the information space and ensure a friendly environment for the work of the honest journalists,’’ President Maia Sandu said.
