Moldovan parliament adopts national security strategy

Chisinau, 15 December /MOLDPRES/ - The parliament today adopted the national security Strategy of Moldova with the votes of 59 MPs.
The document is the legislative initiative by President Maia Sandu and its goal is to enhance the state’s capacity to prevent and counteract the materialization of the risks to the national security, as well as to ensure the process of European integration and cooperation with the partner states.
At the same time, the document highlights that, at present, Russia’s war in Ukraine has serious implications on the national security of Moldova, including in the economic, financial, energy and public order fields. In the context, an updated security strategy is needed.
The document contains the strategic vision for six years, clearly defines the security goals and principles. At the same time, the strategy establishes the ways and directions of action in the security sectors, as well as refers to the implementation of the instruments for the monitoring and assessment of the national security strategy.
Among the security objectives included in the document, there are the consolidation, development and modernization of the national defence system, in order to guarantee the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity; enhancement of the national resilience to the hybrid threats and strengthening of the security culture; strengthening of the institutions and consolidation of mechanisms of combating the corruption; extension of the strategic partnerships with EU, Romania, the USA, the NATO and the cooperation at the international level for security and stability, etc.
The national security Strategy of Moldova will be adopted for a six-year period. The last national security strategy of Moldova was adopted in 2011. Subsequently, in 2016, a new draft was elaborated; yet, the parliament failed to adopt it.
