Moldovan government to allocate another 50 million lei for backing farmers hit by natural calamities

Chisinau, 7 February /MOLDPRES/ - The cabinet has ruled to earmark 50 million lei from the intervention fund, in order to support the farmers who suffered damages in the wake of the calamities from the summer of 2023, the government’s communication department reported.  

To ensure an efficient distribution of the assistance, the Agriculture and Food Industry Ministry (MAIA) carried out analyses and calculations, based on the damage and inspection reports provided by district agriculture departments. The conclusions of these analyses show that the worst hit crop was the maize, especially in the districts from the southern half of Moldova. Thus, the state will earmark over 45 million lei to the farmers whose harvest was compromised at the level of 60 per cent and more. It is estimated that about 390 farmers will benefit from this assistance.     

Also, the storms and the hail in Moldova from 25-27 July 2023 had a negative impact on orchards, affecting a significant number of farmers, especially in the Edinet district. To back the compensation of these losses, seven farmers will benefit from financial assistance worth over 3.5 million lei.  

„The financial resources will be provided to the applicants as direct payment per hectare. The application on the providing of the financial assistance, along with the original documents, accompanied by copies, will be submitted by the applicant or his/her legal representative to the territorial subdivision of the Agency for Intervention and Payments in Agriculture (AIPA),’’ Deputy Prime Minister, Agriculture and Food Industry Minister Vladimir Bolea said.        

The process of submitting applications to ask for the assistance will start in about 20 days. ‘’We encourage all farmers affected to prepare the documents necessary and be prepared to submit the application, when the call is opened. The Agency for Intervention and Payments in Agriculture will provide the assistance needed and will guide the farmers in this process,’’ Vladimir Bolea added.
