Chisinau, 10 February /MOLDPRES/ - A new case of measles has been registered in Moldova in a child aged 5 months from the Chisinau municipality. The child is hospitalized and is under treatment. The National Public Health Agency (ANSP) unveiled information to this effect.
According to ANSP, the case was confirmed as a result of the analyses carried out at the Agency’s virology laboratory. ‘’The child did not benefit from the ROR vaccine, which protects against measles, mumps and rubella, as he did not reach the age eligible for vaccination, according to the national calendar of immunizations,’’ ANSP said.
The case is of import, as the child was in Romania along with his parents on 11-24 January.
Since the beginning of this year, three cases confirmed of measles have been recorded in Moldova, of which one of import. The cases have no epidemiological connection between them.
According to the World Health Organization, in the last months, a significant increase in the number of cases of measles has been registered in the European region. An epidemic of measles was declared in Romania, with 4,679 confirmed cases of measles, including six deaths, recorded at present.
Measles is an extremely contagious viral infection, which can lead to serious complications, such as infection of ear, pneumonia, encephalitis, blinding and even death. A person infected with measles can infect another 18 people, with children affected most often.
Specialists in the field of immunizations call on the residents to be aware of the danger of the spread of measles and other diseases which can be prevented through vaccination.
