Moldovan firefighters to go to Greece to help put out forest fires

Chisinau, July 4 /MOLDPRES/- Team of Ground Forest Fire Fighters of the IGSU of the Interior Ministry (GFFFv-MD) will participate in a mission within the European Pre-Positioning Program in the Hellenic Republic, NEA Makri region. The program is organized within the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
According to the Interior Ministry, Moldovan firefighters will fight the fires together with intervention teams from 12 countries: Romania, Bulgaria, Malta, Poland, Slovakia, Italy, Slovenia, Greece, Austria, France, Spain and the Republic of Moldova, with a total number of more than 500 firemen.
The program is funded by the European Union and part of the costs will be borne by Moldova. The program is managed by the Directorate-General for European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (DG ECHO), aimed at improving response capacity and interoperability between equipment and intervention teams from different European countries.
Dozens of fires have broken out in Greece recently, including near the capital Athens.
Last year Moldova deployed 56 firefighters to help put out devastating fires in Greece.
