Chisinau, Aug 5 /MOLDPRES/- In the central-eastern part of the country, the condition of maize and sunflower crops is more favorable than in the south, according to Vasile Șarban, state secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry (MAIA), who paid a working visit to Anenii Noi and Criuleni districts to assess the negative impact of high temperatures on the second group crops.
Following the assessments, it was found that the degree of crop damage is estimated between 20% and 40%, with extremes of up to 80% in some cases. At the same time, according to the researchers, the variations in the development and fruiting of this year's crops are due to a number of factors, including the varieties used, the cultivation technologies applied, the sowing period, the respect of the fallow and pre-sowing, as well as the extremely high temperatures of the last period.
An important aspect highlighted during the visit was the need to cultivate indigenous, drought-tolerant maize hybrids adapted to local climatic conditions.
According to the legal procedures, farmers who have suffered losses caused by exceptional natural circumstances must draw up a statement of damage. Based on this act, farmers must go to the Chamber of Commerce and Industry and take the Notice of the impediment of non-fulfillment of obligations to subsequently go to banks, creditors and stop the process of payment of penalties and executions.
Data show that in the Northern and Central districts the average harvest of autumn wheat varies between 3.5-4.2 tons per hectare, and in the Southern districts - between 2.2-3.0 tons per hectare. In the Republic of Moldova, about 320 thousand ha are sown with fall wheat. The estimated overall production is about 1.4-1.5 million tons.
