Chisinau, 21 August /MOLDPRES/ - I want to give a signal as regards the good relations between our countries and to express our wish to support Moldova on its European path. Our relations are close and are based on confidence. Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz made statements to this effect today evening, following a meeting with President Maia Sandu.

Olaf Scholz stressed that he had more discussions with the head of state, especially in order to conclude new agreements, to deepen the Moldovan-German cooperation - an important subject for both sides being the way they manage to coordinate the migration. ‘’We are aware of the way Moldova suffers in the wake of the Russian aggression war against Ukraine. We know that the pro-Russian actors and Russia try to destabilize your country, especially against the background of the presidential elections and your country’s accession to the European Union. We will support Moldova with might and main,’’ the federal chancellor of Germany said.

Also, the Berlin official appreciated the activity of Maia Sandu as head of state. ‘’In an exceptional way, your country so far has managed to cope with all attempts of destabilization from abroad. Since the beginning of your mandate, four years ago, you achieved special progress, despite all economic difficulties. You widely opened the door for refugees from Ukraine; this humanitarian act is incontestably important and I want to personally thank you for this effort of your country,’’ Olaf Scholz said.

In another context, the chancellor referred to Moldova’s accession to the European Union as a result of huge efforts. ‘’ Your country is a country candidate for European accession. For me, it was important to support this approach at the discussions which I held at the level of the European Council. Therefore, it is important for us, for me, for the government which I represent to participate in the discussions on the negotiations. The latter started this summer and for this, you proved important pro-reform steps. It is important that you continue this path on your European integration, as the achievements of your country and people are huge. For us, in Germany, a thing is clear: that we must support this European way. The enlargement of the European Union is in the interest of the European Union; it is in the strategic interest of both Germany and of Moldova,’’ German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz said.

Federal Chancellor of Germany Olaf Scholz today pays a working visit to Moldova, at an invitation by head of state Maia Sandu.

Last time, Olaf Scholz visited Moldova on 1 June 2023, when he participated in the Summit of the European Political Community, held in Bulboaca. At the same time, the last bilateral visit by a German chancellor to Moldova took place 12 year ago.

Germany is one of the western countries which among the first opened a diplomatic mission in Moldova on 31 October 1992, just half a year following the establishment of the diplomatic relations.
